Black Education - Women in Black History, Part 2

In pursuit of your black education, when studying women in black history, something we should consider is who were the African queens and what did they do? One thing that we can be glad of is that, even with all of the lost knowledge, there are still several volumes that can be published to answer those questions so I encourage you to do more research and contribute your version of the stories. In this light, I want to briefly discuss with you two queens - Queen Candace and Queen Nzinga.

When I was a child, I was told in school that in 332 B.C., Alexander the Great, after defeating Egypt, cried because he had no more nations left to conquer. If the man actually did cry, it was not for that reason; it was because of Queen Candace according to Chancellor Williams in his The Destruction of Black Civilization. Alexander wanted to continue south and invade Ethiopia, but Queen Candace, at the head of her own army, all of whom were on the backs of mammoth-sized elephants, waited for Alexander at her border. Alexander did not even attempt to fight her.

Queens

Adding more to your black education, observe that nearly 2,000 years later, in 1623, Queen Nzinga, like Queen Candace, stood at the head of her own army; however, she was not fighting a Greek invasion. Her empire, which is now Angola, was being invaded by the Portuguese who were hunting for slaves. Her brother, who had inherited the throne, cooperated with the Portuguese. Princess Nzinga opposed her brother. Upon his death, the princess became Queen. She promptly gave the Portuguese an ultimatum to evacuate her capital city or risk war.

Black Education - Women in Black History, Part 2

During the next forty years, she successfully held the Portuguese at bay, helping to destroy their economy while protecting her empire and as many Africans as she could from the slave trade. Her generals and commanders had such respect for her that one of them, during peace negotiations with a Portuguese governor who refused to seat Princess Nzinga as a member of royalty, bent himself into the shape of a royal stool and offered his back as her throne.

Do the stories of these successful queens remind you of anyone named Harriet Tubman, ex-slave and conductor for the Underground Railroad, who never lost a passenger?

My point is that the stories of these women do not represent isolated cases. Many such women throughout our history demonstrated this same kind of strength and leadership. They struggled to maintain order and justice. They cared for and protected their people. This is the legacy of black women. Today, representatives of mainstream media are doing their darndest to ensure that the legacy of black women is reduced to "nappy-headed whores."

Remember this; as First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama is not a "black first." In re-Africanizing black education, we see that she is simply reclaiming her legacy as a Queen.

Getting Married at Maryland and Delaware Beaches

If you are like most people you'd like to have a destination wedding but it's not possible to get all your family and friends over to Hawaii or Jamaica. Even having your wedding at a destination like Florida can be a challenge if you live in the North East America.

Some of the best beaches are here in Delaware and Maryland, like Dewey Beach with its fun night life, Rehoboth Beach and its artistic community and boardwalk, and you have all of Ocean City beaches, all seven miles of it.

Banquet Halls

Starting with Delaware beaches because it's the first state and all, when getting married you'll often times need a permit. Me as a photographer or any other professional photographer would need their own permit as well to photograph your wedding event. Keep that in mind, because a lot of times the Rangers who patrol the beaches will stop and ask to see it. They are nice about it, often catching you during your setup phase, but just wanted to get that out of the way.

Getting Married at Maryland and Delaware Beaches

Cape Henlopen State Park is really nice because it has a very large area to get together and get lost in. So if you are thinking of getting married in the State park, definitely have a map for you and your guests. There are so many romantic spots to get married there, on the jetty of rocks, or perhaps at sunset with the lighthouse in the background, or if you have 4 wheel drive you can drive right up on the beach and get married with the towers close by. I was photographing a wedding near the towers at sunset and it was beautiful, and there was no one around for miles.

Lewes beaches are nice because in Lewes there are quite a few places close by that make for great wedding reception areas. There are also a lot of hotels for family members to stay in, I've found that a lot of brides / couples liked the Hotel Rodney in Lewes. I often times go there to get those getting ready shots and found this place to be very beautiful. There is also a bridge leading to the beaches near the busier part of Lewes, and my friend Rob who is a photographer, took his whole bridal party up on the bridge for a photo. A Lewes police officer saw what was about to happen and helped stop traffic. I just happen to be in the area and thought, what a cool town.

Rehoboth Beach and the boardwalk area makes for a very wide range of places one could get married. With all the hotels and restaurants lining the boardwalk it's so easy to get ready nearby and pop on down to where your guests have gathered and say your "I Dos" on the beach and you with your guests can go close by to any number of wedding venues. As this is a more populated area for people if you are having your wedding at Sunset, don't be surprised to find various people stopping and watching the festivities, because they will. If any are close to where you planned on getting married, often times they will move for you, and they become more wedding witnesses. And after you kiss, the cheering and clapping start to happen. It's a lot of fun.

Just further south you'll hit Dewey beaches, Bethany Beaches, and Fenwick Island. All great beaches off Route 1 and pretty easy to find. Parking is usually not a problem and there are still many possible wedding reception locations close by.

Going a little further south right after Fenwick Island you'll come to Ocean City, and well now you'll have that you gotten married in Maryland instead of Delaware. A different set of rules and advantages, to name one, No permits, just your marriage license is all you'll need. All the beaches in Ocean City are public beaches and there is nothing, no where saying you can't walk out on the beach with 200 of your guests and get married. If you have that many guests to join you on your wedding day, you are in luck because Ocean City has tons of hotels to choose from. Big hotels like the Carousel with its indoor Ice Rink, the Clarion with its many wedding reception halls, the Golden Sands with its wedding reception area on the 22nd floor overlooking the ocean. On the flip side of that, if you are looking for a small more cozy place to stay with a few guests check out the "Inn on the Ocean" it's a very cute bed & breakfast that I photographed a wedding at.

Some good important thoughts to keep at the forefront of your mind, the further downtown you go, down around the boardwalk the more crowded it's going to be. So allow for more time, time your guests will need to get through traffic, more time for parking and parking downtown Ocean City is mostly meters and so if you can car pool with other wedding guests try and do so. It may not be a bad idea to get a Limousine to take you and your bridal party to the inlet get married, and allow for some time for you and your photographer to snap some photos, because there are so many photo opportunities down there, like the pier, the boardwalk, the inlet with boats passing by or with the sun setting, or the jetty of rocks.

Getting married further north, you are making out ahead of the game with it being less crowded, more larger hotels and wedding venues, and the beaches are general not as packed around sunset. Parking, "That was Easy" is what you'll be saying because they have all kinds of side streets to park on and a lot of Ocean City Hotels have their own parking area. Another think I like is that a lot of these places in north OC have their own mini beaches like the Golden Sands, Clarion, and Ocean Pines Beach Club. Now even thought the Ocean Pines Beach Club is more mid range on 49th street, it's definitely worth mentioning because every wedding I've photographed there has been awesome. Its great with its mini beach there, and the main beach right over the dune area for more photos, and the Ocean Pines Beach Club is a great wedding venue both the upstairs area or downstairs is really great for you and your guests to party the night away. And for late, later night partying you can cross Coastal Hwy and be right at Seacreats, Jamaica USA. Now you're talking a destination wedding and not too far away.

If you are looking for various Beach Wedding Services in Ocean City or Rehoboth Beach areas, you won't have to look much further then Google. There are many wedding professionals proficient at weddings on the beaches and know a lot of the ins and outs, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Communion Centerpieces

Communion centerpieces can help set the mood of your celebration. When decorating for the party, keep in mind the theme of the day and whether you are going for an elegant set-up or more of a celebratory event. For a fancier effect you may consider the following decorations.

· Small personalized candles around a larger candle. This creates a beautiful effect in a dimly lit room. Also, you can have your guests take home the smaller candle holders as favors from the party, and the larger candle can be used to add a splash of color to each table.

Banquet Halls

· Statuettes surrounded by small candles, flowers, or rose petals. These decorations may be porcelain or silver and should be religious themed, whether they are shaped as angels or children praying. If you'd like to offer them as favors, you may want to give them away to one person at each table.

Communion Centerpieces

If you are having a more laid back, child-oriented party, you may want to decorate the tables with the following items.

· Personalized candy jars filled with your choice of candy. This can be as colorful and fun as you would like. You can then surround each jar with flowers or tie balloons to the jar. You may want to offer personalized goody bags so that guests can take home candy for later.

· Individual lollipops, whether chocolate or fruit flavored, can be created in a variety of colors with intricate designs to commemorate your event. You can place a large lollipop in a vase in the center of the table for a fun, kid friendly centerpiece.

Ideas For Wedding Reception Table Arrangements You Want To Know

The trick with making floral arrangements for your reception and other areas is that you need to have either some advice or some professional help. Looking in bridal magazines and in floral magazines is all well and good, but those are pictures of no-budget arrangements. You, on the other hand, can't necessarily spend your entire budget on the flowers.

On the tables

Banquet Halls

At your reception is where the majority of the flowers will go. Each of the tables, as well as the head table, will need a variety of arrangements to add color and style. And while there really aren't any rules for what arrangements you can have, you will want to keep a few things in mind.

Ideas For Wedding Reception Table Arrangements You Want To Know

If you're thinking about what kinds of arrangements to put on the head table, think about what pictures will be taken there. If your arrangements are so complicated that they will be distracting in a photo, then you may want to rethink your plans. Again, a florist can help you out with this kind of logistic problem, especially if they're local. Many will already have experience in any reception hall, so they know what they need to do.

And for your guest, though large floral arrangements can look great in the reception hall, you have to consider that they will be sitting down at one point. Having larger floral arrangements blocking their view of the other side of the table or of the dance floor or head table is not a very good setup.

Think about where your guests will be sitting and what they will be able to see. They may have brought cameras to take pictures themselves, so you don't want to hinder their view.

Ideas you can use

When it comes to creating drama and yet realistic floral arrangements, you will want to think about the height above all (no pun intended). A newer trend in floral arrangements is to have tall, think vases with a few stems of flowers in each, creating a larger bouquet at the top of the vase. This looks like a garden from the overall perspective, while giving your guests the ability to talk to each other.

On the other hand, you may also choose floral arrangements that are lower to the table. Some couples like to choose a combination of floating flowers and candles to add a little warmth to a table. And they also serve as conversation pieces as well.

Floral arrangements don't have to come from bridal magazines or shows in order to be useful at your wedding. Look around and see what kinds of arrangements can be done. Talk to florists about what you need and see what they suggest.
