Mutual trust is probably the greatest gift a couple or members of a group can share. Putting yourself in the situation of being vulnerable to those around you and relying on their actions can often times worry or disappoint a person. Being able to break through the worry and disappointment by building a certain level of trust and concern is key to any relationship. Complete trust and concern for one or more people truly takes a large effort, but if both parties are willing, it can create a relationship that will last a long while - both in the personal and professional business world.

So what does it take to have this type of relationship with others? To begin with, people sense how you feel. Not only that, but they figure out how you truly feel about them through your actions an attitude. If you want someone to change their attitude towards you, it is best to change any negative attitude you have towards them first.

Christian women today have many women mentors and role models from Bible days on which to base their business and leadership ventures. The qualities and characteristics of these women from long ago provide patterns for running successful enterprises as well as for being involved in government, legal matters, community organizing and even military operations. Most of these women were married and some functioned from their homes. 1. Rahab: Joshua 2:1-22; 6:17-25. Rahab was a businesswoman who ran a lodging place and provided for her family members. Her qualities and skills were in working in harmony in a business partnership, managing a home-based business, business development and growth, multi-tasking, coordination, human relations, and mentoring skills.

4. Huldah:2 Kings 22:14-20: 2 Chronicles 34:22-28. Huldah was a prominent prophetess and married woman who was sought out by the King's Advisors for counsel about spiritual matters. Huldah was known for being honest, highly intelligent and a scholar of the Scriptures. The qualities and skills she shares with contemporary Christian women include being a strategist, teacher, strong communicator, life-long learner and a leader who advised others and made hard decisions.

5. Phoebe:Romans 16:1-2. Phoebe was a preacher who worked closely with the Apostle Paul. She was sent by Paul to teach and preach the gospel to the new believers in Rome. Paul strongly urged the believers there to accept her preaching and to support her while in Rome. Phoebe understood the right time to approach others with new ideas and came with the proper introductions. She went to Rome as an evangelist and some believe as a deaconess. The qualities and skills presented by Phoebe are project manager, evangelist of new ideas, teacher, preacher, and collaborator.

6. Deborah:Judges 4 - 5. Deborah was the first woman to be a judge over a nation. She was willing to take on necessary hard tasks that others would not do. Through her leadership the laws of the land were understood and she promoted ethical behavior through the law. Deborah led the Israelite army into a victorious battle in a particularly difficult war situation when her General refused to ride into battle without her. Deborah was a powerful law-maker with qualities and skills as an Army Commander, leader of large groups, decision-maker, motivator, judge, and political official.

7. Candace, Queen of the Ethiopians, Acts 8:27. The Candaces were female rulers of in the African nation of Ethiopia (also known in ancient times as Kush). Unlike Queens of some other African Nations of that time, the Queens of Kush, who were independent rulers, known as Candaces, a distinctive title that existed for 500 years. One Candace received the information about spiritual matters from her treasurer who was baptized by the Apostle Philip during a long journey on state matters. She was receptive of new and better ideas to benefit those she represented. These powerful women had qualities and skills of being national political leaders, rulers, and warriors. They were decision-makers, negotiators and goal-oriented.

Christian women in business have some fabulous role models from Bible women for doing business and being a leader in these contemporary times. The few examples given in this article only provide highlights to the types of activities women had as spiritual and church leaders. Places of Interest in Iraq

A country that was known worldwide for the rich petroleum and crude oil resources is also where war ruled through the year. A small country in Western Asia, Iraq's history dates way back to Mesopotamia.

The majority of this country is covered by deserts, except for the two main rivers, Tigris and Euphrates. Since the land is dry, weather here is quite hot most of the time, though the mountains up north do see cold winters and snow falls, sometimes so severe, it leads to flooding.

An ancient site, that was once prominent, is covered with high walls, and palaces apart from the magnificent temples. Even though the place has been eroded by rain and time, it still stands tall. One of the most famous ancient sites in Iraq is the Ur of Chaldees, which was even mentioned in the Bible. It is said to be the birth place of Abraham and built around 4000 BC. It remained the capital of Sumeria for decades, and the tombs and ziggurats in Ur have remained well preserved.

What remains of the city of Ctesiphon is this huge Arch, which was part of a banquet hall built during the early century by Persians who ruled the place. It has survived the severe flooding that happened in the Tigris River and is still open to tourists to feast their eyes on.

The hands of Victory were a monument that was built by Saddam Hussain, to celebrate his victory. This used to dominate the Baghdad skyline ever since the Iran and Iraq war took place. It basically marks the entrance of new parade grounds in the central region of Baghdad. It looks like two swords crossing each other at the top as if to symbolise the war that happened. At the base of this monument, lie nearly 5000 helmets belonging to Iranian soldiers who were slain in the war. The hands that hold the swords are a replica of Saddam Hussein's, in fact created from a photograph given to the sculpture. This was torn down and destroyed during the recent war.

Yet another tourist attraction in Iraq is the Shaheed Monument, which was open to public in 1983. This is again a place that symbolises all the Iraqi soldiers who died during the war with Iran. A huge dome, which has been split in the middle, with the two halves offset, has the domes are sheltering a flame. Around this area, a playground for children, walkways, bridges, ample car park, and even a lake can be found.

Art is an interesting part of life. At least, it allows one to be wild. Egyptian artwork is an interesting one. It depicts death and the "life" after. Some people believe that Egyptians are full of hallucinations. However, a keen eye will disagree with this idea. Some pictures show heads of musicians. Others show women melting perfumed wax. The scent goes into their hair to give a nice smell.

An interesting picture depicts life in form of a tree. The birds on the tree are used to show the different stages that a human goes through. There are various colors that are used to show the various stages. Orange is for the old. Grey is for the infants. Birds that are related to old age are drawn facing the west. This is a sign of nearing death. Those that are related to the early stages of life face the east.

Alcatraz Inmates

Alcatraz is famous for having housed some famous gangsters and criminals. Most of these prisoners were those considered dangerous, disobedient, escape risks and known for committing serious crimes such as murder, racketeering, smuggling etc.

Al Capone, one of the most notorious gangsters in America, was born in New York in 1899. He started his career in Brooklyn before moving to Chicago and had already been on the Bureau of Investigation's ""Most Wanted"" list by the end of the 1920s. Al Capone was indicted and convicted for income tax evasion in 1931, and found guilty on five counts. In 1932, he was initially sent to an Atlanta prison, and then finally transferred to Alcatraz in August of 1934.

Brooklyn

George "Machine Gun" Kelly Barnes, infamous for crimes, which included bootlegging, armed robbery and kidnapping had already been in the gangster business by 1927. In 1933, Kelly received life sentence for the kidnapping of Charles F. Urschel, a wealthy businessman and his friend Walter R. Jarrett. He was first incarcerated in Leavenworth, Kansas and was later transferred to Alcatraz in 1934 due to his constant escape threats.

Henry "Henri" Young started his career as a bank robber and committed murder in 1933, was found guilty and served time in different state prisons. In 1935 he was sent to the U.S. Penitentiary on McNeil Island in Washington State and was transferred to Alcatraz in the same year. In 1942, he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after he stabbed a fellow inmate to death. His life-story was made famous by the Warner Brothers movie, "Murder in the First".

Robert Stroud, the "birdman of Alcatraz, was first convicted of manslaughter in 1909, after he brutally shot and murdered a bartender. Stroud was transferred from McNeil Island, Washington to Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary in Kansas where he began to develop a keen interest in birds. He was allowed to breed them and maintain a lab. He was transferred to Alcatraz in 1942 to spend the rest of his days. The story of his life was made famous by the movie, "the birdman of Alcatraz", starring Burt Lancaster.

Movie Review: Hugo

This movie review or comment is about Hugo. Among the movies I am looking forward to seeing the most this fall is Hugo, Martin Scorsese's latest work. Derived from the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, the movie, features Asa Butterfield in the starring role as Hugo Cabret, an boy who is orphaned and living a life of secret in the walls of a train station in Paris, in the 1930s. When he comes across a machine that is broken, (Chloe Moretz), a peculiar girl and (Ben Kingsley), the reserved, heartless man who operates the toy shop, he found himself a part of a mysterious, magical adventure that has the potential of putting every one of his secrets in danger of exposure. The film also features Sacha Baron Cohen in the role of the awkward train station inspector.

This movie is the very first attempt of the Oscar-winning, iconic Martin Scorsese as he ventures into family films. It is also the first time that he is trying his hands at 3D film making. Therefore, expect the film to equally appeal to children, older elementary students who may have read the novel and film buffs who take their movies seriously. This adventure is supposed to be an exceptional family pick for the upcoming holiday season; especially with its supporting cast of A-list stars, young stars Chloe Moretz and Asa Butterfield, and the legendary director, Martin Scorsese. Look forward to some tense scenes and peril as the adventure unfurls.

The latest trailer of the Hugo adventure was released on October 26, 2011 and it comes with a tone that is a great deal more serious than the trailer which was previously released in July. This most recent trailer features "Breath and Life" by Audiomachine, which is incidentally the very same music that was used in the previews of both The Fighter and The Adjustment Bureau. This is in sharp contrast to the first trailer which was released in July and featured cheerful and upbeat music. The first trailer came with "King and Queens," the song done by 30 seconds to Mars and it offers more on the playful chase of Hugo with the lumbering inspector of the station (Sacha Baron Cohen). This recently released trailer depicts Ben Kingsley more as Georges Méliès, the ground-breaking French filmmaker.

The film rights of the book were bought in 2007 by Martin Scorsese and he began filming in London at the Shepperton Studios since June 2010. This adventure film also stars Johnny Depp, Richard Griffiths, Emily Mortimer, Marco Aponte, France Dela Tour, Ray Winstone, Helen McCrory and Christopher Lee.

So there's tons of cheerleaders out there dancing on the field and we never bother to get to know them. All we do is just stare at them dancing, think 'oh they dance good, look good, typical cheerleaders' and move on without a thought as to what really goes behind the scenes of an NFL cheerleader. Well, I am here to tell you that there is a lot more than meets the eye. All those movies you saw like "Bring it On" and those television shows that showed a bunch of drama queens as cheerleaders have got it all wrong.

Myth #1 - It's easy being an NFL cheerleader.

Um. No. There is no way that it is easy being a cheerleader. So much goes into the auditions, that you're lucky to even make it into the squad in the first place. Hundreds of girls try out and you have to be in the top 3% to make it in the squad, no kidding. They all dance good, look good, are energetic, enthusiastic, and have a great personality on top of all that. After they get into the squad, it takes hours of practice almost every day in order to get the NFL dancing routines down. It gets worse when they have to dance in the freezing cold, especially in the northern States (which some NFL teams use as an excuse for not having a cheerleading team and yes not every NFL team has a cheerleading squad). Outside of the dances, they also have to show up for charity events, make guest appearances, do photo shoots, and sometimes even travel overseas to entertain our very own US military troops to keep their morale high. Whoever said being a cheerleader was easy obviously hasn't seen one at work.

Cheerleaders going out with the likes of Tom Brady and Randy Moss? Forget about it.

How much do cheerleaders get paid in the NFL? The answer to that question is to a game. Heck, there are times when they don't get paid at all. Some of them get out of cheerleading and find that a bunch of opportunities await them because of their NFL cheerleading elite status. Another thing is that these cheerleaders need to be mature and intelligent so that they can answer to the media. After all, they are an important aspect of the team's public image.

NFL cheerleaders deserve a better reputation. Sure there are a few black sheep out there but in general, the NFL cheerleaders are good girls who do their best to perform for us. The least we could do is show our appreciation. Don't forget they also contribute to the community in various charity events so they do help out on a local and national level. While Poseidon's largest governance was the sea and ocean, he was also considered the god of horses, and the "Earth-Shaker", creator of earthquakes. In Mycenaean culture, Poseidon was seen as the most powerful of all the gods, even above Zeus - he was the most frequently written about god in the entire pantheon. At this point, he was associated with "Two Queens", Demeter and Persephone, although in later Hellenic Greece he was not at all related to these goddesses. He was also seen in this culture as the "Earth Father" with Demeter being the "Earth Mother".

Poseidon was also a major patron god of several large cities within Greece. In Athens, he was second in line only to Athena, and in Corinth he was the main god of the city. Apollo was a close associate god, and while Poseidon's realm was generally seen to be in the areas of the Earth and bodies of water, he also had another trait that was a bit more sinister. Poseidon was also blamed for causing mental disturbances, such as epilepsy. He shared this ability with both the god Dionysus, and the creatures known as the Maenads.

It was said that when Poseidon was in his benevolent aspect, he created both calm seas and new islands. When the god was displeased or angered, however, he would cause earthquakes and shipwrecks by striking the ground with his trident. Poseidon was often pictured in a chariot being pulled by horses or sea horses, holding a trident, and associated with dolphins.

While Zeus was known as the originator god in later parts of Greek culture, Poseidon was the first "head god" of note. His later appearances as the duel god of water and earthquakes meant that he had the ability to affect many people at once, so he garnered many prayers, sacrifices and attention from all of Greece.

Residents, Fellows and Attendings - The Doctor Hierarchy

Today's tip answers the following three questions. (1) What is a resident? (2) What is a fellow? and (3) What is an attending physician?

(1) A resident is a doctor who's beginning their post graduate training after medical school. Depending upon the type of residency that they're in, that will determine the number of years that they must spend in post graduate training. For example, a medial resident spends three years of additional training after medical school. An obstetrician/gynecologist spends four years of additional training. There are some surgeons and sub-surgical specialties that spend anywhere from five to seven years in post graduate training.

(2) Now, beyond that there is something also known as a fellow. A fellow is a doctor who goes beyond their typical expected residency training into a subspecialty that allows them to obtain a specialized certificate in the area that they're focusing on. Here's an example; a doctor finishes medical school after four years. They then go on to do residency training in obstetrics and gynecology. That's another four years. Then they do a fellowship in hi-risk obstetrics, also known as maternal-fetal medicine. That could be another one to two years. Finally, after all that training they will have moved up to an attending physician.

(3) Okay, now what does it mean when a doctor is an attending physician? It means that they have graduated medical school. Sometimes they are private doctors who have offices outside of the hospital, but because of their attending privileges are allowed to see, treat and operate on patients in the hospital.

So those are the definitions of what is a resident, what is a fellow and what is an attending physician.

Does it sound too good to be true?  Well it isn't too good to be true, but you must qualify to buy.  In many cases, to qualify to buy and HDFC coop, you need to make less than 120% of the areas Median Income.  In 2008, this number was ,500 for 1 buyer and ,725 for 2 buyers in a family and ,950 for 3 buyers in a family.  Alternatively, some buildings, depending on the by-laws of the coop, have income restrictions to buy based on a multiple of the yearly maintenance and utility charges that the apartment has.  In either case, usually the management company and/or the Board of Directors of the coop will look at the adjusted gross income of your previous 2 years tax returns. 

In addition to an income restriction to buy, many HDFC Coop's have a "flip tax" when you sell.  Typically, this flip tax is calculated as a percentage of the profit that you make.  The profit is defined as the sale price minus the purchase price.  The flip tax could be as low as 5% and can range up to as much as 85% of your profit. 

Clearly you need to take these factors into account and depending on the flip tax the Coop has, the price and value of the apartment may vary greatly.

We have seen that an HDFC coop represents a great opportunity to own a piece of the "greatest city in the world" at a fraction of the price of other coops and condos but with that comes some restrictions on purchasing and upon selling you often have to give a portion of your profit back to the coop and/or the city.

The Proscenium Arch

The proscenium arch is like a window to the stage! It is a window that separates the audience from the stage and it is a central element in an established form of theater design.

The theater is entertainment! Yes the theater is entertainment! The theater is about viewing the stage. In the old Victorian theaters, seating rose almost literally and symbolically to 'the gods. This was where the highest seats were...but these seats were away from the plushness, glamor and style below. Yes the gods, they offered a view but it was one view.

You could say the proscenium arch was the window for this view. It was a 'real and true' window. However, maybe the real window was the great central space of the theater which rose to the lights, sometimes great chandeliers above....

Sometimes as you look through the proscenium arch, you can see the great stage below...and sometimes it is at the back of this stage that the orchestra plays.. the orchestra plays behind the stage rather than in front of the stage in the 'pit'. And here then the stage is another world..

The proscenium arch and its curtains and all..and the lighting around.. these can create the illusion of space. You could argue that the proscenium arch restrains and hinders 'space'. The audience is 'cramped in' as they wait for the rise of the curtains. But why would they be cramped in? There is space for everyone! Maybe the proscenium arch does the opposite. Instead of 'restraining' space, it rather creates space.

Space is important in theater..and in the victorian theaters..seating rises to the 'gods'. It's as if there is a lack of seating and the only way is up! But is this really the reason? Maybe the reason is to view the stage or maybe it is ..something to do with the real and true purpose of the theater, which is entertainment. Yes, entertaining not just the so-called high-brow but the low-brow also...the high brow, the low brow..and the middle brow of course. Yes, the reason is entertainment and theater, it's just offers the human being the chance to be a spectator, any chance...and 'the gods' and the 'circles' can give that chance. And 'the gods', although they are cheap and high' are sometimes the best places to see the entertainment.

But what does the proscenium hide? It hides the stage behind and when the curtain rises,the stage opens out into a wide space. Sometimes it's not just a picture that the audience sees.....it is not just a picture they see but a whole world. And in this way, you can say that the proscenium arch hides and then uncovers a world rather than a stage or a picture and people want to see new worlds! So the proscenium arch is the great window which 'offers' this world. It is the 'book cover', the great outer design aiming to uncover the great inner design behind.

In the staged art of wrestling, there are many pro wrestling jobbers who constantly lose. Because wrestling is fixed, obviously some of the wrestlers will need to lose. Those wrestlers who exist for the sole purpose of losing to others in order to make them look good are called jobbers, and are one of the backbones of professional wrestling. This guy never really wrestled much, but he always seemed to be around. This group was comprised of Taka Mikinochu, Funaki and several other members of Japanese descent. They were involved in a number of ridiculous angles, including chopping off a certain part of Val Venis' anatomy. Funaki is perhaps best known for his later angle as "Smackdown #1 Announcer."

6. Shark Boy
Shark Boy is a relatively recent phenomenon, becoming known only as the stature of TNA has risen since about 2004. The kids seem to love him, and yet he almost always loses, helping to get heels over with the younger audience. Lately, he has developed a persona where he mocks Stone Cold Steve Austin, adding to his pure jobberificness.

5. Gangrel
Gangrel was a member of The Brood during the Attitude era, along with Edge and Christian. While Edge and Christian have both since went on to become World Champions, Gangrel kept getting fatter and now wrestles on the independent scene as "The Vampire Warrior." He has a sweet entrance that saw him rise through the stage surrounded by a ring of fire, but ultimately such a cool entrance was wasted on this jobber.

4. Colin Delaney
Colin Delaney is another newcomer to the world of jobbers, but has done so very well. After a successful run as a face jobber on ECW, he was then switched to a heel in order to job to the faces on the roster. He's been giving great performances along the way. Famous People With Marfan Syndrome

Marfan syndrome is a disorder in the connective tissues of the body. Although not symptomatic, certain traits in such people include long hands and legs, eye problem, tapered fingers, or problems in the heart or eyes. The defect in the tissues result in their improper functioning and this can lead to death at any age.

Brooklyn born Neil Leslie Diamond began his singing career with the folk group, The Roadrunners, between 1954 and 1956. While a senior at NYU, studying medicine, Diamond was offered a songwriting position, by a publishing company, for fifty dollars a week.

How to Measure Tables For Tablecloths

I have been in the tablecloth industry selling to all types of facilities for over 10 years, such as, party rental stores, hotels, restaurants, caterers, banquet halls, churches and anyone else who uses dining facilities.

Most know how to measure for tablecloths but for those that don't this is how to measure for round, square and rectangle tables.

Banquet Halls

Rectangle tables are generally in 3 lengths 48, 72 and 96 inches long and are referred to as banquet tables and 6-ft or 8-ft tables as the most used. While the average table is 30 inches wide some vary with widths of 18, 24 and 36. Square tables would follow the same formula.

How to Measure Tables For Tablecloths

Now you need to determine your facilities' need for a drop, which there is no standard. How the tablecloth needs to look on the table is personal and by choice. Some want the cloth to cover just the top with a little drop others want it to go to the floor. A general guideline is 10" to the lap, 15" to the bottom of the chair or halfway down the table and 30" is to the floor, if in fact the table measures 30" high. Although nursing facilities only want a 4" drop to accommodate wheelchairs. Note any cloth that goes to the floor should have rounded corners to avoid jutting out and creating a means to have someone trip.

Once you determine what drop is best for your facility then you need to add that measurement to the table measurements. For example your table measures 30x72x30, which means width, length (table top on both and height. You want a 10 inch drop you would add as follows 10+10+30= 50 and 10+10+72= 92 so the tablecloth you need is 50x92, now some companies only offer standard sizes so go up to a 54x96 if you cannot get the exact size you need.

This formula work for all tables for rounds you would add the drop of 10" to the diameter. Example 60" round or 60R add 10+10+60= 80 round or 80R cloth.

For measuring skirting, Determine whether you want to cover 3 or 4 sides then add the table measurements, 4 sides of a 6-ft banquet. 30+30+72+72= 204 inches then convert to feet or 17-ft. For 3 sides 30+30+72= 132 inches or 11-ft. Many vendors require skirting is purchased in increments of 2 this is because skirting is cut the length of goods and not width and most fabrics are wider than 60 inches.

To measure skirting for round skirting take the circumference of the table and times by pie then divide by 12 5 x 3.14 = 15.7 or 16ft of skirting.

Always take into consideration whether your tables have squared or rounded corners as 1/4" may make a difference in how tablecloths lie on the table.

Ask if your vendor if you measured correctly but most manufacturers won't recommend a drop as this is your decision and ultimately your responsibility if the cloths don't fit. So learning what your facility needs or how the cloths should look and how to measure will insure you correct fitting tablecloths.

Low Budget Wedding Reception

The reception alone will bust your wedding budget if you're not
careful. Of course, the most obvious way to save money on the
reception is to keep it small. Where you host this grand
occasion could make or break you.

Your low budget wedding remedy? Find a reception location
that's free or low cost.

Banquet Halls

A free location may include, your home, or a friend or family
member's home. A low cost option might include the Church
reception hall, the local fire department's reception room, and
club hall rentals. Most will have a kitchen area for preparing
and serving food.

Low Budget Wedding Reception

Sometimes you will even find a local restaurant that
specializes in low budget wedding receptions. These will likely
offer a package for the reception which may include dinner and
limited beverage with the rental of restaurant space or banquet
rooms. Check hotels in your area for banquet rooms as well. Some
may rent the banquet room alone and/or offer reception packages
as an option.

Leave no stone unturned in your search! You may happen upon a
gem of a deal that will save you alot of money. Ask around. Get
recommendations from friends and family. Do a local search on
the internet. We have several plantations in our area who offer
wedding reception packages. These are elegant locations and are
usually competatively priced; Including options for the low
budget wedding.

Make a list or chart to record all your findings. Record not
only price but services available, and packages available. Then
you can compare where you will get the most for your money.

For instance, you may be able to rent a space for a really
cheap rate and hire outside catering for the dinner. But, if
you find a location that costs more but will offer you a
package that includes the catering, it may be the better deal
in the long run.

The one big exception to this scenario is if you opt for a
potluck reception. Many guests may be pleased, if not relieved,
to be given the choice to bring a reception dish in place of a
wedding gift. You will find that low budget reception packages
usually come with a low budget menu as well. If you choose this
option, you will save greatly on catering expenses. I am certain
your guests will be more pleased with the menu selections. This
would be your best low budget wedding option and will save the
most money.

The Potluck Reception

Don't be shy to pursue this potluck reception idea. It is truly
the traditional way to celebrate. And, it is truly the number
one low budget wedding option.

Today's weddings are so commercialized. You will learn that
caterers offer very limited menus to very limited budgets!
Guests will likely be very pleased and welcome the idea of a
potluck reception.

The potluck reception goes well with any wedding theme. If you
are shy about approaching this option you can simply call it an
"Old Time Traditional Wedding Celebration" The potluck dinner
will suit this theme quite naturally and no-one will even
question it!

You may even want to pick an "Old Time" theme for your
decorating and favors. This will further incorporate the idea
of an old time tradition theme. Perhaps a 50's theme or a 20's
theme. These are both popular old time themes.

Simply slip an added note with the invite, or on the invite, to
give guests this option. For example the note might read...

~Our reception will be an "Old Time Traditional Celebration"
with a potluck dinner. ____ Please check here if you would like
to bring a dish for the reception in place of a wedding gift.
Call with dish suggestions please.

Have them call to get or offer suggestions on a dish so you
have control over the menu. No one is obligated to
particitpate, but I'm sure you will be surprised at how many
guests will opt for this.

You and your guest will be equally surprised at the great
variety and quality of the dishes provided. Guests will want to
bring only their best recipes to a grand occasion such as a
wedding reception!

How To Plan A Banquet - A Guide To Planning Perfect Banquets For Company Or Private Parties

First time planners are often stricken with complete fear! Even those that plan events over and over again still fear that something will go wrong and they will be the subject of ridicule. Hopefully we can allay the fears and quell the butterflies in your stomach by helping you through the entire project.

There are a lot of questions you need to ask. First timers probably don't have the foggiest idea what questions to ask, so, the first thing we'd better do is outline these for you.

Perhaps the easiest way to do that is to fill out a form. (I love forms!)
If you were to phone me and ask me to help you make arrangements for a special event, the first thing I would do is reach for a blank form, and over the phone we would fill it out. When I had all the information, I would be better prepared to help you.

Before you continue reading, you may want to print the banquet planning worksheet(PDF) from my website. That way you can follow along with the worksheet as I describe the planning process. I've also included a pre filled sample planning worksheet that you might help.

Let's begin with fact finding.

PURPOSE

The first question to ask is, "What is the purpose of the event?" This question should be really easy, but it's perhaps the most important. The purpose of your event will determine your event's agenda.

DATE

Break out your calendar to decide a date for your event. Look for possible conflicts. It might be tough to get people out to a Saturday night banquet if it's a three-day holiday. It would be unwise to put on a church social if your local school, where most of your congregation had children attending, were having an open house or play that night.

Pencil in a date and then try to think of possible conflicts. I know of one organization that booked a very popular and relatively expensive Jewish comic into the club house of a predominantly Jewish retirement community. Attempts to sell tickets failed miserably, because they had not realized they had scheduled his appearance on a Jewish holiday - a very expensive oversight!

BUDGET

There are many, many determining factors in establishing a budget. First of all, how many are expected to attend? You might have a pretty good idea for a company party, but in some cases you might just have to make a "guess-timate" until you can get more information. Make the best possible estimate based on what facts you have, and proceed.

TICKET PRICE

Another factor to determine before we select a location is how much your attendees are willing to pay. Sure, we can work the other way: we can pick a location, hire a band, select the menu, etc., and then add up how much it all costs and thus determine how much everyone needs to pay, but doing so will probably leave you hurting in the end.

If you expect 1,000 people, and you determine .00 a person is acceptable, then your entire budget for food, printing, entertainment, etc., is ,000. If you expect only 20 people and you know they won't come if it's over .00 a person, then you know you're far more limited.

LOCATION

Determine the geographical area where the event is to take place. If you live in the area where the event will take place, you may already know of various hotels, country clubs, restaurants or catering halls that can accommodate your group. If you don't live in the area, be sure to go look at the potential location before you book it. If the event is in a distant city and it's not possible for you to travel there, and the event is a significant one, I suggest you hire a professional meeting planner.

I once attended a banquet in a quaint "50's malt-shop-type restaurant. The party planner had not gone there to look at the room where the party was to be. She had just taken the word of a friend. True, it was a great restaurant, but their "room" had about 5 permanent booths on each wall. Guests were facing in all different directions. This made it almost impossible for the magician they had hired to perform. To further confuse the issue, it was not even a private room. Restaurant customers could not get to the restroom without disturbing the party, and the 50's music continued to blare through the ceiling speakers throughout the evening because it was piped throughout the whole restaurant and could not be isolated from one room. A visit beforehand could have prevented this nightmare.

Many, if not most, facilities do not charge a fee for the use of the room but instead absorb the rental fee into the price of the meal. For instance, in our example of 200 people, a banquet facility would be delighted to supply a private room in order to sell 200 dinners.

Usually they will have several dinners to choose from - perhaps a chicken dinner, complete with beverage, salad and dessert, for .00 per person; or prime rib at .00 each; or sirloin steaks at .00 per person. In our example we are charging .00 per person. Let's select the prime rib at .00.

Does that include tax and tip? Oh, Oh! Find out if it does, or you may get a surprise at the end of the night. Let's say it does not. 15% tip and 8% (or whatever) tax makes the dinner a total of .14 per person. Our sample budget calls for 200 people at .00 each for a total of ,000. If all 200 people attend, dinner will cost ,428. That leaves ,572 for all other costs.

By the way, the facility may ask you for a deposit and guarantee. If you guarantee 200 people, you will have to pay for 200 dinners even if only 175 show up. Generally, a facility is prepared to serve about 10% more people than you guarantee. So it makes sense to guarantee a lesser number than you expect. Even some of those who told you absolutely they would be there, maybe even gave you a deposit, don't show for one reason or another.

Just to be on the safe side, in our example of 200 people, I would guarantee the restaurant 185. If you're pre selling tickets, which I recommend, you can always adjust your estimate upwards with the restaurant a day or two ahead of time if needed. Ask the facility about their requirements in regard to a change in the guarantee.

AGENDA

The evening agenda is largely determined by the event's purpose. A typical event might go like this:

6:00 - 7:00 - Social or cocktail hour

7:00 - 8:00 - Dinner

8:00 - 8:15 - Meeting/Awards/Business

8:15 - 9:00 - Entertainment/Speaker

9:00 - 9:10 - Raffle/Door Prizes

9:10 - 1:00 - Dancing

Having an hour to "gather" is always good. You and the facility both will want everyone present when you actually sit down to eat. It's been my experience that almost everything starts late, so plan for it and don't be disappointed when it happens.

Will you be having a cocktail hour? A "Hosted" bar means that drinks are free to the party-goers. If you choose to host the cocktail hour, be prepared to spend about 00 for our sample group of 200 people. Most organization-sponsored events have a 'No-Host' bar, in which guests buy their own drinks. It's appropriate to announce 'Hosted', or 'No-Host' in the invitation.

Some form of entertainment during the cocktail hour is certainly a plus. The facility may have music piped in through its sound system, which is certainly the most economical; however, for around 0 you could have live music. Most banquet facilities have a piano, sometimes on wheels, and will let you either rent the piano or use it for free. Fee for the piano rental should be around to 0 and a piano player anywhere from 0 to 0.

Other cocktail hour entertainment could include a chamber group, a jazz or "society" trio, harpist, or a strolling accordionist. A strolling "close-up" magician, performing from group to group or table to table, is always fun. Other forms of entertainment for the cocktail hour could include celebrity look-alikes, mechanical or conventional mimes, a balloon animal sculptor, caricaturist, graphologist, palm reader, tarot card reader, stilt walker, or just about anything else you can think of! Again, your budget is your gauge.

DINNER

This is pretty easy. When the Maitre'd says dinner is ready, have your party sit down!

The vast majority of banquets have certain people assigned to sit at the head table while everyone else may sit where they wish. If you choose to have a head table, you should make small place markers for those assigned to sit at the head table, and don't forget to discuss table arrangements with the facility.

OPENING

Someone, perhaps you, should step to the microphone and announce that dinner is ready and ask everyone to take a seat. When this has been accomplished your President, or whoever is presiding, should welcome everyone.

It is appropriate at most banquets to have someone lead the flag salute, followed by a blessing on the food. People should not be called upon for these jobs extemporaneously, but should be asked in advance and their names and responsibilities should be listed on the printed program if there is one. Following the flag salute and prayer, your Master of Ceremonies (or who ever is conducting) should introduce the people sitting at the head table, introducing himself last.

THE PROGRAM

If business of any sort needs to be conducted, begin when dessert is finished, or at least served. Make sure that the facility knows that you do not want any bussing (clearing of tables) or coffee served after the program starts, as it can become an irritating distraction and take away from the enjoyment of the program.

ENTERTAINMENT

Following opening remarks, and/or other business, you could either introduce the main speaker, or present some form of entertainment.

This could be the highlight of the evening! There are many outstanding after-dinner performers and speakers. If you really want to have a successful event, hire a professional. At this writing 0 to ,000 can buy you some pretty top-notch entertainment.

How about a comedian-magician who uses a member or two of your group and does some hilarious bits of business and audience participation magic tricks - 30 or 40 minutes of non-stop laughs!

Or picture this...the dessert has just been served and in walks "Lt. Columbo," complete with overcoat and cigar..."Oh, excuse me," he says, "I was looking for somebody else." All eyes are riveted on this familiar figure as he turns and starts to walk out. "Oh, one more thing, is this the Walker party?' Then for the next 30 minutes or so he does a comedy routine in the style and delivery of Peter Falk as Lt. Columbo, using names of people in your group.

That will rock your people out of their seats with laughter. These are just a couple of suggestions. Everybody loves to laugh, and a good professional entertainer can make you a hero.

How do you find that kind of entertainment? Again, watch out for the well-meaning friend. Sometimes hiring a friend of a friend who tells jokes or plays the banjo can put a wet blanket on the evening if they don't live up to your expectations.

Probably the best way to secure talent is to work with a professional talent agent that specializes in special events. Ordinarily there is no fee for his services. He can make recommendations and suggestions based on what your needs are, and work within your budget limitations.

Some entertainers may have special requirements, like a stage, spotlight, two mics or something else, and these items need to be arranged with the facility. There may be a rental fee involved.

RAFFLE/DOOR PRIZES

Giving away door prizes or raffle prizes should not be held until after the entertainment or main speaker. Perhaps it's an inducement for your guests to stay until the end.

If you're selling raffle tickets, again you need to make out a budget. How many tickets do you expect to sell and for how much money? Do you want to make a profit? Let's say you expect to sell 100 tickets to those 200 people expected to come, and we sell them at the banquet for .00 each. That'll give you 0 to buy prizes with. You can put this in your general budget or assign someone to take care of the whole raffle, including purchasing the prizes and selling the tickets.

DANCING

Following the raffle, the formal portion of the program is really over. Your people can now go home. If you've elected to have a deejay or band, they may stay for dancing.

The facility might charge to set up a dance floor. Sometimes this is a portable dance floor they build right on top of the carpet. A band will cost anywhere from 0 per band member to 0 per band member for four hours. A small trio of keyboard, drum and guitar could be anywhere from 0 to ,500.

An ,800 to ,500 five-piece band, including a vocalist, is average. If you hire a band, you may be able to use one or more of those same musicians to provide cocktail hour and/or dinner music for a small additional fee. You normally need to make a deposit at the time you hire the band. Anything over four hours' playing time is considered overtime, and you should talk with the band or agent about the cost of overtime when you make the initial arrangements. Bands also need to take a 10-15 minute break each hour. Ask if the band will supply recorded music during their breaks.

MOBILE DEEJAY

Sometimes you might prefer a DeeJay playing recorded music instead of hiring a band. This gives you the advantage of hearing the original recording artist instead of a dance band's rendition.

Another advantage is that most mobile DeeJay units will set up before dinner and offer to play dinner music at no additional cost, and of course, a DeeJay does not take a break during the evening, so you have non stop music for your event.

Cost-wise, there is not a lot of difference between a 3-piece band and a DeeJay. Some DeeJays offer a full light-show that few bands do, and even with an additional charge, this could be a real plus. I think it's just a matter of taste. Some people insist on a live band and others are just as adamant about a DeeJay.

PHOTOGRAPHER OR VIDEOGRAPHER

Video taping an event, except for historical purposes, is unnecessary. Seldom will the video tape or DVD be watched more than once after the event. Yes, maybe a Bar or Bat Mitzvah will watch his or her recording years later when they grow older, and maybe even a bride and groom would watch a well-edited and condensed recording. A company or organization's banquet, however, will be seldom if ever watched.

I would recommend that you hire, budget permitting, a professional photographer rather than leaving it up to one of your guests or a friend of a friend who only takes photos twice a year. You can have the photographer deliver prints or a CD of digital photographs in which case you could print just the photos you want.

PROMOTION

Probably the most traumatic thing that could occur is that you planned the entire event and then no one came. If it's a company party and the food, entertainment, drinks and dancing are all free, I don't think you will have a problem, as long as you let everybody know when and where and that it's FREE!

But if that's not the situation, you may need to promote the event. Once you have all the facts (WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, WHO, and HOW MUCH), you can create a flyer - a piece of paper with all the facts on it, designed to motivate people to attend.

If you're an artist, great! You can create the flyer yourself. If not, maybe someone in your group is and they can help you. Otherwise, you need to "rough it out" the way you'd want it and take it to a graphic artist to do the "camera-ready copy" for you, then off to a printer to print however many you're going to need. How many you need will depend on how you're going to distribute them.

The layout, printing, envelopes and postage all need to go into your budget. There are, of course, additional ways you can promote the event - word of mouth, bulletin boards, phone committee, club or company newsletter, posters. If your event will be open to people outside your organization, you might try using the publicity channels of other related groups, companies, schools, etc., as well as your own. Have a "brainstorming session" with your committee, if you have one, to think of all the ways you can get the word out.

And remember that if you want people to come to your activity, you can't just tell them. You have to tell them and tell them and tell them! Use all the resources at your disposal, and don't hesitate to repeat yourself. The more times you tell them, the more will come!

TICKET SALES

There are as many ways to handle this as there are ways to promote the event. If you have to lay out funds ahead of time (which is usually the case), it is good to get as much money as you can up front. Pre selling your tickets will help you do that. Of course, your publicity must state your requirements and deadlines. This also will help you get a handle on how many are going to attend. Remember though, that there will still be some last minute cancellations and additions, so stay flexible.

TABLE ASSIGNMENTS

As mentioned earlier, most organizations assign only the head table, and the rest of the attendees are left to sit where they wish. Some groups insist on drawing pictures of the tables on a sheet of paper, numbering them, and then assigning people to specific tables.

I think it's far more work than necessary, but if you must, then have at it.
Some banquets, especially those honoring individuals or groups, offer entire tables "for sale." 10 people per table at each means that for 0 someone could reserve a whole table. Make sure you put a "reserved" sign on that table, showing the name of the host.

THE PRINTED PROGRAM

When all the facts are in, if the budget will permit, a nice printed program could be put at each place setting or handed out as people arrive. It should contain the agenda for the evening and credits given to all those who contributed to the event.

Many organizations have been successful in selling ads in the program to defray the cost of printing or even to raise some extra money. I've put 0 income under the income column of our example. Don't you think you could convince 10 people to give you their business card and pay to be advertised on the back page of the program? Of course, this idea could be a little tacky if the event is to celebrate little Bobbie's 10th birthday. Use your best judgment.

DECORATIONS

This could be a big item or not - strictly up to you. If you picked a beautiful location, and it's not a special seasonal event like a Christmas or Halloween party, why not just enjoy the facility's decor? If you feel you need decorations and you have a sufficient budget, call a party decorator who uses balloons. They go a long way towards dressing up a room without spending a lot of money.

Centerpieces on each table look nice. You can ask someone to donate these or have someone clever make something for each table. Many facilities make such a nice table layout that a centerpiece is not necessary. Don't spend money unnecessarily, but do remember that the nicer the ambience, the better the memories or the event will be in the minds of those who attend, which means that they will want to come to your next event, too!

One note of caution. If you're having entertainment, be careful that large
centerpieces, particularly balloons, don't block the view of the performing area or even the people sitting on the opposite side of the table who want to see and talk to each other.

YOU DID IT!

Yes, you will fret and worry until the whole thing is over, but every party planner does. Just relax, do your best and enjoy! (Here's a secret: If you enjoy what you're doing, the people you are doing it for will enjoy it, too!)
